(Right, because Jesus always said that you should shoot a man in Reno just to watch him die, and that after you take a shot of cocaine and shoot your woman down, you should go to bed and stick that fuckin' .44 beneath your head. This book does that. Obviously these people know enough about him to know he was a spiritual person.
The first two thirds of this book are pretty amazing. The lyrics of many old gospel songs are mentioned (from as early as the 1930s).
It is probably the same thing that makes them feel the need to write lame books about their spiritual journey.

I'm not sure what it is about Christians working in the entertainment industry that makes them feel the call to make bad movies about Jesus. Overall, a good read.
Read more. I've read many reviews that don't like this book because Johnny Cash was religious and was raised as such.
Within this theres all sorts of questions raised that give me some big thinks regarding specifically American Christianity and its relationship to blind patriotism.
Comment Report abuse. A very inspirational book in which the readers can see how truly Johnny Cash had to fight against his addiction but also where he openly talks about his relationship with faith and religion. I obtained “Man in Black” after seeing the movie “I Walk the Line.” The movie didn’t show me enough of his life, and I was dissatisfied with the movie and wanted to learn more. I first read it when it was published, and am glad to have revisited it again all these years later.
I’ve always liked Johnny Cash, but after reading this book I love him.
What an amazing talent. Quality was fair.
A video that I might remind you was loaded with religious imagery, reflecting the artists personal beliefs YET we still get some zombies giving this a low rating because of his faith.
My husband read this one quickly so now it’s my turn! Just finished reading the book “MAN IN BLACK: HIS OWN STORY IN HIS OWN WORDS” by JOHNNY CASH. It amazes me.

To see what your friends thought of this book. How's that for timing? I couldn't wait to read it and I was not disappointed. I also find myself asking how I should feel about Mr Cash winding up thinking he's been chosen by God to sing country songs about Israel?? Cash is widely considered to be one of the most influential American musicians of the 20th century. Johnny Cash, born J. R. Cash, also known as "The Man in Black", was a multiple Grammy Award-winning American country singer-songwriter. For the most part I enjoyed how Cash wrote like a man aware of how much he'd grown and how much growing he had left to do.
Great to read an autobiography with such focus.
Always was and still am a huge fan. His relaying of the crazy things he went through, and all the near death escapes was incredible. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness. Start by marking “Man in Black” as Want to Read: Error rating book. The book deals entirely with his addiction to amphetamines and how his faith in God helped him overcome it, but he also ties it all back quite beautifully to the tragic death of his older brother when he was a child. Refresh and try again. I wish I had read this one first before I read Mr. Cash's other autobiography it the context would have been easier to understand in the second book.
Still, I highly recommend Weyman if you care for historical fiction.

Just like his later autobiography "Cash," "Man in Black" shows you the real Johnny Cash, the man behind the music. He was so lucky to have lived through all of that, and then to find peace afterwards. February 1985
He's one of the last of the gang left - barely. There also was a much stronger emphasis on the impact of faith upon all of his life than the movie depicted.
But more than this, a man who was humble and understood two things really well; that he was a sinner in need of a Savior and that Jesus Christ is that Savior. Welcome back.
There is also a focus on songs. I'm not a Christian and I don't like being browbeating into the how christianity will save me but I can see it helped Mr. Cash.
It still blows my mind that my dad hung out with these old cowboys - Cash, Waylon etc.
God put specific people in Johnny's life to help him overcome drugs and when he did, he lived his life for others and for God. Just very, very dumb. I remember being amazed by the honesty of Johnny Cash, and his life's story. Cash reflects upon his life through the lens of his faith in the Lord, describing the highs AND the lows.
